SPAR is the world's largest food retailer, with approximately 14000 stores in 35 countries worldwide. Spar originated in the Netherlands in 1932 by legendary retailer Mr Adrial Van Well and now, through its affiliate organisations, operates through most European countries, Nigeria, South Africa, Asia, Greenland and Australia. It operates on a principle similar to retailers' co-operatives elsewhere, with owners grouping together to get bulk discounts from suppliers/wholesalers. It has its headquarters in Amsterdam.
The first flagship SPAR Supermarket is located in a newly constructed shopping centre in the Eastern side of the city in an area called Lekki-Ajah district of Lagos and was inaugurated on 14th of August 2010. This striking newly built 3,000 m² store is highly visible from the main road to and from Lagos City. It is very accessible to shoppers and will attract customers with moderate to high income profiles. The Artee group has acquired six further locations for SPAR supermarkets and plan to open at least 4 before the end of 2014.
